The first of three ERSL Cup finals began on a hot steamy Saturday morning at the Richcraft field-turf complex in Kanata. The U17/U18 Cup final featured two Nepean Hotspur teams:
- Boys U18 L3, coached by Jamie King and James Whipp
- Boys U17 L3 team coached by Joe Martello.
In a fast, physical contest the opening goal was scored by Jingsen Vanderkloot of the U18s after a long run from his wing-back position. The lead was short lived, as the U17s responded with a goal of their own by Benjamin Padovan. The first half ended in a 1 – 1 stalemate, although it required a brilliant save by keeper Colin Reid of the U18s off a well struck free kick by the U17s.
The exchange of goals repeated itself twice again in the second half. A brilliant header by Shekinah Kalenga of the U18s was followed almost immediately by a goal by Benjamin Padovan of the U17s. Not long after the U18s took the lead again, with a second header goal, this time by Nico Werschler. Once again the U17s replied with a goal by Mustafa Omar when the U18s failed to effectively clear the ball from the top of the penalty area.
The final goal of the match was scored late in the game by Shekinah Kalenga, as he calmly slipped the ball under Matthew Bain, the charging U17s Keeper. The U17s pressed hard in the final few minutes looking for the equalizer to take the game to penalty kicks, but it was not to be on that day.
Congratulations to both teams.
